Ability Level

Ability Level

Different bindings are designed for different ability levels. Typically beginner bindings will have more flex and are more forgiving. Meanwhile bindings for more advanced riders are typically stiffer and more responsive resulting in higher cost.

Beginner - From those that have never snowboarded to those that are able to slide left and right in control on both edges on green terrain.

Intermediate - Not new to snowboarding but also not the most skilled rider on the mountain. You are able to string together turns with minimal traverse comfortably on all blue terrain and easy black runs.

Advanced - Can handle pretty much all runs. You are able to make turns with rhythm and flow on black runs.

Expert - You know who you are and you can handle anything the mountain throws at you.

Terrain Type

Binding Type

Bindings are designed for specific uses and different terrain types.

All Mountain - Designed to work well in all terrains and snow conditions. Versatile bindings that can handle all parts of the mountain.

Freeride - Designed to be taken off the groomers and onto diverse terrain. Typically they are stiffer, more responsive bindings. Also ideal for powder boarding.

Freestyle - Designed specifically for terrain parks and those who perform tricks. Tend to have a medium flex to offer some forgiveness.

Size

Our sizing calculator is a good estimate for your size, however it is always recommended to reference the manufactures sizing charts when buying a specific pair of bindings.

Flex

Flex

Softer bindings are more forgiving, and stiffer bindings are more responsive. Your preferred flex is often determined by your riding style and ability level. For those on a budget, soft and medium flex bindings tend to be less expensive than stiff and very stiff bindings.

Soft - Typically only found on beginner bindings to maximize forgiveness to new riders. Some freestyle bindings will also be in this rating.

Medium - Versatile flexibility. Can handle speed and carving while also enjoying some of the forgiveness of soft bindings. Very common for Intermediate All-Mountain riders. Also commonly preferred by Freestyle riders of all skill levels.

Stiff - Ideal for All-Mountain riders who prefer responsiveness, speed, and carving instead of forgiveness or don't spend much time in the park. Typically the flex used for Freeride bindings as well.

Very Stiff - Typically for advanced and expert Freeride riders looking to maximize the responsiveness of their board at high speed on technical terrain willing to sacrifice any forgiveness in the process.

Style

Binding Style

Strap - These are the most common type of snowboard binding. They're easy to use, secure, and responsive and have been the standard for ages.

Rear-Entry - The highback of these bindings will pop open, you slide your foot into the strap and then close the highback onto your boot. They are quicker to put on but you must put on in a standing position. Also adjustments between runs are usually needed throughout the day to maintain consistent tightness.

Step-On - The Burton Step On and K2 Clicker Bindings get you snowboarding quickly. They require the Burton Step On boots and allow you to easily slide your boot in and click your heel into place.

Mount Pattern

Binding Mount Pattern Compatibility

Take a look at your snowboard to see which mounting pattern you have. There are four distinct styles of mounting patterns. However, many bindings will be capable of multiple patterns with the use of converter disks.

2x4 - The most common mount pattern found on snowboards. These bindings will have mounting disks under the footpad of the binding. Mounting holes are 2cm apart vertically and 4cm horizontally.

4x4 - Similar to 2x4 but less mounting options. The 4x4 mount pattern typically will only be found on entry level snowboards.

Channel - Created by Burton the Channel System allows for a wider range of binding stances. While bindings designed for 2x4 pattern can use converter disks to connect to the channel system, it is often preferred to use Burton EST bindings. These bindings are only compatible with the Channel System. Their screw locations are on the outside of the binding instead of under the foot pad. This allows for easier adjustments and more sturdy connection.

Burton 3D - Unique to some Burton boards the triangular mounting patterns allow for different binding stances.
