Pickleball Paddle

Ability Level

Ability Level

The paddle's ability level often matches its price. If price isn't an issue, consider choosing a paddle one level higher than your current skill to grow into it. Conversely, if you're a beginner likely to stay at that level, a budget-friendly beginner paddle is ideal.

Beginner - New players or those with limited experience are still learning basic rules, techniques, and strategies. They focus on developing fundamental skills like serving, volleying, and court positioning. Beginners typically have a UTPR of 1.0 - 2.5.

Intermediate Players with a solid grasp of basics are refining skills and strategies, consistently executing basic shots, and adding advanced techniques. They often play recreationally and in local tournaments, with a UTPR of 3.0 - 3.5.

Advanced - Advanced players have a deep understanding of pickleball and possess highly developed skills. They can execute a wide variety of shots with precision and have strong strategic knowledge. Their UTPR is usually 4.0+.

Playstyle

Pickleball Playstyle

Pickleball paddles are designed to enhance different playstyles. Which playstyle best describes your game?

Control - For those who prioritize precision and finesse, control paddles offer excellent touch and accuracy, allowing you to place your shots with pinpoint accuracy.

Balanced - Ideal for players seeking a blend of power and control, balanced paddles provide versatility on the court, giving you the ability to adapt to various playing situations.

Power - If you prefer an aggressive playstyle with strong, fast shots, power paddles are designed to maximize your hitting strength and speed, delivering explosive performance with every swing.

Core Thickness

Core Thickness

The thickness of the core plays a big role in the performance of a paddle. Thicker core paddles are known for increasing control. Meanwhile thinner paddles increase power.

Thin (12mm or less) - Thinner core paddles are known for having more power and pop at the expense of some feel and control. They are less stable and provide more feedback on off-center shots giving them a smaller sweet-spot. Ideal for players looking to maximize power.

Standard (12-14mm) - Standard core paddles offer a balanced mix of power and control, making them versatile and suitable for various playing styles and skill levels. Good pick for beginners.

Thick (14-16mm) - Designed for more stability, control and forgiveness. Best pick for beginners but also a great pick for anyone you who looking for precision and finesse instead of power.

Chonk (16mm or greater) - The thickest option available, providing maximum control and stability. Tailored for more advanced players who prefer a heavier paddle with a commanding presence on the court.

Shape

Paddle Shape

Elongated - This shape is longer and narrower. Typically about 16.5 inches long and 7.5 inches wide. An elongated shape will give you more reach, power, and spin, but it has a smaller sweet spot and less maneuverability compared to other shapes.

Classic - The original paddle shape, usually about 16 inches long and 8 inches wide. This shape offers a balanced mix of power, spin, forgiveness, and maneuverability, sitting between elongated and widebody shapes. Best pick for beginners.

Widebody - These paddles have a wider face around 8.5 inches and a shorter length around 15.5 inches. This design offers the largest sweet spot (more forgiving) and high maneuverability but sacrifices reach and power and spin.

Face Material

Face Surfaces

The surface material of your pickleball paddle affects its power, feel, and sweet spot size. Each material offers distinct performance characteristics.

Fiberglass (Composite) - Fiberglass, sometimes referred to as composite, offers the most power among common facing materials. It acts like a trampoline, transferring energy back to the ball. However, it has a smaller sweet spot compared to carbon fiber and graphite due to its flexibility.

Graphite - A type of carbon fiber, graphite is more cost-effective and plays similarly to carbon fiber. It offers better feel than fiberglass and a comparable amount of power to carbon fiber, making it a versatile choice.

Carbon Fiber - Known for its excellent feel and durability, carbon fiber provides a larger sweet spot by distributing the energy of the ball across the paddle face and into the handle. While it offers less power than fiberglass, it excels in control and feel.

Premium Carbon Fiber - Some paddles use carbon fiber from high quality manufactures (most common being Toray). This premium carbon fiber will increase the durability and longevity of the face but will come at a steeper cost.

Hybrids - Some brands use a combination of fiberglass, carbon fiber, and graphite, producing paddles with performance characteristics based on the materials mixed, balancing power, feel, and sweet spot size.

Weight

Pickleball Paddle Weight

Different brands might have slight variations of the ranges of these weight classifications, but general idea is the same.

Lightweight (7 – 7.5oz) - The lighter the paddle, the easier it is to maneuver. This can be a significant advantage at the net during fast exchanges with opponents. However, you need to swing harder to generate more power.

Midweight (7.6 – 8.2oz) - These paddles offer a balance between maneuverability and power. They are versatile and suitable for a variety of playing styles.

Heavyweight (Greater than 8.2oz) - Heavier paddles allow you to produce power with less effort due to the additional weight behind the ball. This is beneficial for dinking, as shorter swings reduce error and give you more time to get back into a ready position. Heavier paddles are also more stable at impact, reducing wobble and increasing consistency.

Handle Length

Pickleball Paddle Handle Length

The handle length of a pickleball paddle can vary between 4 to 6 inches. The total length and width of the paddle cannot exceed 24 inches, so increasing the handle length reduces potential surface area of the paddle face.

Short - Ideal for players who prefer to have a finger on the paddle face, similar to a ping pong paddle. Offers a larger paddle face for increased control. Beginner players may find it easier to make constant contact due to the larger faces of these paddles.

Medium - Suitable for players who primarily use one hand on the paddle. Provides a balance between control and power. Medium handle length is around 5 inches.

Long - Ideal for players who use two hands on the paddle, especially for backhand drives. Longer handles provide more power and spin due to the increased leverage. These handles are 5.25 inches or longer.

Edge Type

Edge Construction

Edge Guard - These paddles are ideal for players who seek long-lasting equipment and are less concerned about the additional weight that an edge guard may add. Edge-guard paddles provide reliable performance and are a great choice for players of all skill levels.

Edgeless - Ideal for experienced players with good control, these paddles offer enhanced ball control and a clean look. However, they are more prone to damage from accidental impacts, making them less durable compared to paddles with edge guards. Only found on high-end paddles.
